My 60hz AOC monitor suddenly has horizontal black bars on the bottom portion of the screen. When I mouse over the black bars around the bottom taskbar area, there's a green dotted vertical line that shows up. I have a dual monitor setup with this being my 2nd monitor and my primary monitor being 144hz. It's been working fine until today. I've swapped out hdmi cables and the black bars still appear. I've updated my Windows 11 and nvidia gpu drivers, and I've tried changing resolution, refresh rate, and cleaning dust off cables/ports, no improvement from any of these. I plugged in this monitor on another computer and the black bars still show up. If anybody has any ideas on the cause/fix for this issue, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

2023.05.28 07:09 KuckinOatz Nvidia Drivers Glitch.. faulty GPU? (win11)

I have bought this pc prebuilt (I know it isn’t the greatest idea) but I needed something that would let me pay it off slowly with zip pay instead of part by part.
Anyways, I’m running into an issue where my file explorers green loading bar is stuttering and flickering and I’m not sure if it is normal or not:

I have updated the Bios, updated all the graphic drivers, reinstalled windows and everything I can think of and the problem still persists.
If it is normal for windows 11 I need someone to confirm it for me because I can’t find any one else with that issue.
Edit: I have found out I get this glitch due to installing nvidia drivers, I have DDU my machine and installed older drivers and the issue is still there.. it’s just not as prominent. I have reseated the gpu, cleaned the pins.. I just don’t understand why I still get the issue (I’ve also disabled MPO to no avail)

I upgraded some of the internals to see if it would help, but nothing has changed. Is my GPU faulty?
A clean boot shows that the problems is software related, and it’s boiled down to nvidia drivers directly.. but isn’t it necessary to have a driver installed?

The ghost signal.
It had started as faint readings that rapidly spread across the entirety of know space, manifesting as a sort of white noise in the background of Federation communications and networks, so weak it could only be picked up by our strongest equipment, and even then it was so barely noticeable that for decades most had written it off as a simple statistical error or calibration issue. Until we noticed it was getting louder. Wherever we went it was always there, as if it were not a signal but rather a reading we were unintentionally picking up, one that had been getting stronger from the moment it had appeared. The signal that over a century ago could only be picked up by the strongest of our communications arrays, was starting to now impact those same arrays, and not just that, but even innocuous things like holopads and other civilian equipment had begun to malfunction at a much higher rate.
At this point the idea of it being a mere software glitch or hardware issue had been long since thrown out, not a single software update, code rewrite, or hardware swap had done a single thing to solve the mystery. But it was ever so slightly stronger in some sectors than others, and with the signals ever increasing strength we have finally been able to tell the relative difference in strength from one sector to another. Now the most concerning thing to me was that the signal was strongest nearest to Venlil Prime.
To say this revelation was worrying would be beyond an understatement, both to our own people and the wider Federation, we sit on both the border with the Arxur and unknown space, the idea that this wasn’t an anomaly but rather an attack or weapon caused even greater panic than we had ever seen before.
If this was the Arxur that would mean that they are in possession of a weapon that could have the potential to cripple our ships and communications, leaving worlds defenseless and unable to even call for help, serving our worlds to them on a platter without even a single shot fired in defense. The idea alone keeps me awake at night, thinking that we could be at the complete mercy of another who would see us dead or enslaved.
However the second option was somehow just as frightening. If it’s not the Arxur, then what is it? Where is it coming from? Is it even coming from a single place? Though I guess that last question did have some kind of answer. A few [years] back the readings spiked to unprecedented levels, causing mass electronic malfunctions across the entire federation before falling back down to a steady level, albeit much higher than ever before. However this time instead of seemingly appearing all at once, the spike seemed to rapidly cascade across space, and by mapping out the miniscule differences in time we could gain a general direction of its source, and that source was far out beyond any known space of both the Arxur and Federation.
Well I guess that’s why I'm here. Or rather why all of us are all the way out here in what might as well be the middle of nowhere on the edge of Venlil space, chasing this ghost signal to find its source, failing that, finding out what it really is.
I don’t like being out here, I don't think any of us do. I don’t know why, but I feel like the longer I stay out here, the more I feel like… like we’re being watched. The further we go into the outer territories the more uneasy I start to feel, and from what I’ve overheard from the rest of the crew, I’m not the only one. Honestly I’d rather be back home right now, the longer I stay out here the worse and worse it's been getting.
I’ve been having… nightmares. Recurring ones, for [months] now. Worlds burning, their surfaces charred and cracked like charcoal, the surface scarred with a symbol glowing a burning red. A five pointed star sitting inside a circle. Each time I fall asleep it’s a different world, Venlil Prime, The Cradle, Mileau, Nishtal, Aafa. I don’t know how I know what world I see given the destruction, it’s like there’s some knowledge planted in the back of my mind telling me what I’m being forced to look at. I wish it ended there, but every time, after witnessing worlds burn, I'm forced down into a ship or put on the surface.
Usually nightmares come from some experience in the real world, an Arxur raid, a predator attack, or simply a horrible accident. I had never thought that a nightmare itself could be a direct source of fear. But those… things, defied all logic. How could life ever evolve on any world to end up like… that, ignoring how such creatures could even develop any technology at all, somehow being more brutal than even the Arxur have ever been, if such an idea was even possible. Every night I am haunted by creatures tearing people apart, worlds burning, and red ships descending on whatever remains.
I’ve obviously developed some form of predator disease, that's the only explanation for why my mind has been spiraling down and down all these [months]. Only the deranged mind of a predator would be consumed by thoughts of nothing but death and destruction night after night. Sometimes when we jump into subspace I swear I can hear whispers. And now I know I’m going crazy because, well, when I look at the ship diagnostics it almost looks like something is shaking the ship while in subspace. Some of our fleet look like they have emerged from subspace with damage to the hull. It’s progressed so far I’m hallucinating.
The impact this has had on my mind has been steadily deteriorating my performance and I’m worried that someone will find out. If that happens I'll lose everything, my life, my herd, my family. Luckily nobody seems to have noticed yet. Still I wonder how long I can keep this ruse going, how long I can convince everyone I’m a normal person.
“Vikam, Anything to report?” The captain of the ‘Steady River’ asked me as he entered the bridge, probably having just woken up given his general lack of tidiness.
“Nothing unusual captain, readings here are only marginally higher, less than point-seven percent, however our long range scanners have picked up surges coming from this system here.” I projected the star map to the captain's display, showing an area several systems away where we had detected a similar pulse to the one from [years] ago, albeit much, much smaller.
“How long ago was this?” The captain perked up near instantly.
“Just over a claw ago it seems.” Apparently this set him off.
“What!? And you didn’t tell me!? If we finally have a solid location on these readings we need to investigate immediately!” One of the techs on the bridge spoke up after the captains’ outburst.
“Umm sir, what if it is the Arxur?”
“If it is, don't you think we need to know!? That’s the entire point of this expedition! Vikam, tell the fleet to prepare to jump. If it is the Arxur, we need to arrive simultaneously so we aren’t sitting alone without help.” The captain gave his orders and I obeyed, coordinating with the other capital ships of the fleet to act as anchors for the smaller ships to follow into subspace.
Our ‘exploration’ fleet was little more than a bunch of warships with science equipment strapped to them. Over 1200 ships split into four search groups, some splitting even further beyond that, would all now reconvene and jump to this system, if it was the Arxur we would need every ship available to beat them back and hopefully capture whatever technology was causing this. Personally I scoffed at the idea that the Arxur could come up with anything that could do this, I doubt they even have the capability of inventing things beyond new torture methods, considering everything they have was given to them. It doesn’t matter, our fleet was reinforced with some of the newest and strongest ships we could build, the Steady River is of a new ‘Heavy Cruiser’ pattern, a fresh off the line Farsul ship with enough armor to take on any Arxur vessel and measuring in at a massive [800 meters]! And we managed to negotiate to buy four of them! And received eight more directly from the Farsul navy! Combining them with the other ships sent as part of the combined search effort, our fleet had 26 capital ships and over 500 cruisers, with the rest of the fleet being filled in by bombers, frigates, corvettes, and patrol craft. I’m pretty confident we can take a few savage reptiles.
“All sub-fleets present, preparing for subspace jump.” a voice called out somewhere on the other side of the bridge as I double checked the fleet registry, ensuring all ships were accounted for and properly linking with their respective capital ships for the aforementioned jump. I began the countdown.
“Synchronization complete, subspace drive spooling up… Preparing to jump in three… two... one… Now.” The stars visible from the viewports rapidly shifted from white to blue, to purple, and then vanished as we entered subspace and the bridge was bathed in light blue.
“All ships have successfully jumped and are in formation. We will arrive at our destination shortly.” I gave a quick update before the tech from before spoke up again.
“Captain, should we prepare for the possibility of the grays showing up?”
“Mm… Yes, pre-charge our weapons and have the crews on alert before we re-enter realspace.”
Uhh, I’m not so sure about that. “Sir, is it wise to jump into an unknown situation with our fleet prepared to attack? There’s still a possibility that an entirely unknown party is responsible for the readings, and to be honest I don’t believe the Arxur are capable of such a thing as this. If they could cripple the entire Federation at once wouldn’t we already be dead?”
“And you’d rather us go in completely undefended? If it’s the grays then we’ll be ready and with greater numbers, if it’s an uncontacted species then they need to be warned of the Arxur and join the Federation as soon as possible, and if it’s simply a natural anomaly, then our actions don’t matter. I’d rather be prepared than caught off guard and served on a plate to those savages, if they even know what plates are.” The captain half ranted towards the crew. Once again the tech from before interjected just as I was going to offer my counterpoints.
“S-sir, what if it's another pred-” he was cut off by the captain laughing.
“It’s what? Other predators? Ha! Need I remind you that not a single predator has ever made it beyond their world without our help. Now tell the weapon crews to be ready.”
I don’t know if it’s my lack of decent sleep, but it almost seems like the captain has been becoming just as irritable and out of it as I am, becoming more and more paranoid about being attacked, and keeping the sensor and weapon crews on near constant alert when searching through systems and the occasional asteroid field.
I switched one of my displays to check our progress, and just as we passed the three quarter mark something strange started to happen.
Shaking. The ship was shaking. And not just a little, it feels like I’m in an atmospheric craft going through a storm but… but this shouldn’t even be possible! Not in space and definitely not in subspace, there’s no precedent for this! There’s no such thing as turbulence in space! I slammed my paw down onto the touchscreen, hoping I hit the right button and rejoicing that I did when the ship's alarm blared and the brace warning went to all compartments. Worse still, it’s not just us.
According to what I’m seeing in the fleet communications, every single ship was experiencing the same instability we were. Some of the smaller ships were taking it so bad that they collided with each other due to the tight formation we flew in, the now wrecks instantly vanishing from subspace in a flash and becoming little more than shrapnel flying through realspace. Is this some kind of attack? People have theorized about subspace weapons but they’ve never gone beyond theories and imagination. What is going on!? If this continues we won’t have a fleet left by the time we arrive!
“S-sir we have to exit subspace right now! Our fleet is literally being torn apart!” I tried to plead with the captain but-
“No! Keep going! Tell all vessels to de-sync from their capital ships and distance themselves, even if it means we have staggered arrivals! We haven’t come all this way just to stop now!”
He’s gone insane, but I transmitted his order. Evidently all the fleet captains had agreed to this as our entire fleet de-synced from each other, but not before we lost several more ships in the process. Many had collided like the unfortunate ones before, and some simply dropped from subspace without any notice, if this was intentional or not I can’t say, but it’s entirely possible whatever is causing this forced them to do so, seeing as our own subspace drive was being pushed to its limits.
I could do nothing but squeeze my eyes shut and push myself as far back into my chair as I could, waiting for this to be over. I couldn’t see it, but I could hear the panic around me as I could imagine everyone else was having a similar response.
A bright flash of white and blue, and then…
Nothing.
Slowly I opened my eyes and saw my computer displaying a message stating our arrival at our destination and the pings indicating the arrival of the others. Raising my head slightly I looked around the bridge and out the viewports. The still panicking crew, the captain heavily breathing and leaning back with his eyes closed, the systems dual stare-
Wait, no. This system is only supposed to have one star, every single scan and map has this system as having a single star. But there, a second one stood, much smaller than the first, and… it looked… wrong. Just wrong. Instead of burning it looked like it was boiling, and had tendrils of red energy splitting off of it, with two much larger ones coming from opposite ends, splitting the void around it in two. I was so caught up in the sight of it, I barely noticed the rest of the fleet arriving, or what’s left of it. We lost over two hundred ships just getting here, either destroyed or dropped out of subspace before arriving.
“What is… what am I looking at here?” The captain, now sitting up straight, spoke everyone's thoughts out loud. “Scan that immediately!”
It’s obvious we’ve found the source of the ghost signal, however being so close to it meant that our equipment which was barely working in the first place, now struggled to even look at that… thing.
Well at least I know my initial judgment was wrong, the anomaly wasn’t a star, or even the size of one, rather it was the size of a small moon. Our sensors mistook it for a star, as it had the full output of one. This relatively tiny object in space was emitting a higher level of energy than the system's own star, but none of the sensors could make any sense of what it was or even the type of energy it was emitting, every sensor we pointed at it was overloaded with errors, but… there were objects… coming through the anomaly.
“Sir I c-can- we can’t make any sense of… what this-” I tried to give some explanation but was cut off by the sensors giving off a very different alert, ship detections, thousands of them. Tens of thousands of them. “C-captain I-I’m picking up something, there’s ships coming f-from that… that thing!”
The entire bridge scrambled to get the equipment back in order as everyone wanted to know what was going on, how anything could survive being near the anomaly that nearly fried our systems, never mind coming directly out of it. Was it even an anomaly in the first place? Had we come across some race that was so advanced that they could literally tear reality as a means of travel? Was our inability to scan it merely a by-product or intentional design? Whatever it was, the energy used was like nothing we had ever seen, or even theorized of.
I pulled up as many sensors and screens as I could to get a look at those ships and-
My heart almost stopped.
I could hear nothing but ringing and my ever increasing heart beat. I feel freezing cold and burning hot all at once. I sunk my claws into my left arm to check I’m not still in a nightmare, I wish I was, but this is real.
All of those ships are real.
Red ships.
Those things, pulled straight from my nightmares, were now bearing down on us. I could do nothing but stare in frozen horror as the automated reports indicated over three thousand ships headed to our direct position. I could do nothing as that same red energy effortlessly lanced through our ships, tearing our already loose formation apart. I could do nothing as every ship fired back in panic, the interference preventing mass communication as the fleet desperately tried to return fire. I could do nothing as-
As a green light quickly overcame the visual sensors, and just as quickly left. The ship I was watching returned to view, now a gutted lifeless wreck, burning green from the inside out. Its strange tentacles that sprouted from the bottom now limply floating in the void alongside the shattered pieces of what remained.
What. Was. That.
The interference must have been greater than I thought, because those red ships were not the only thing out there. Scanning the system as fast as I could, I saw other ships on the other side, facing the anomaly, not the same sinister red, but a pale gray. Massive ships that dwarfed all but the most gargantuan of the crimson attackers. By the stars, even the smallest of those ships was almost as big as a standard cruiser! And those capital ships… they must be at least [2000 meters]!
I would’ve asked why any sane race would build such things, but those red ships varied in size so greatly that many surpassed the gray behemoths, sometimes even more than twice over!
That knocked me out of my stupor, the pale behemoths were holding off tens out thousands of vessels whilst our scanners indicated they possessed a mere five thousand, each firing off green and blue beams alongside endless swarms of missiles and kinetic fire so numerous the red ships couldn’t physically evade.
Plasma and kinetics I understand, although strange that it was bright blue and not the standard white, but that green energy was just as unknowable as the red coming from the anomaly and those damnable nightmare ships. Even their missiles detonated with pulses of green instead of the anti-matter design used by every known race.
What had we walked in on? We had just barged into two forces engaged in one of the largest battles in history, using completely unknown technology, and now one side was protecting us, or at the very least, attacking our attackers.
My hearing was finally coming back to me. “W-WE CAN’T REFORM! FLEET COMMUNICATIONS ARE OVERLOADED!” A tech screamed, a response to an order from the captain I hadn’t heard. Everyone was screaming, the bridge was in utter chaos, and the rest of the fleet was faring no better, hundreds already lost, our fighters and bombers were easily picked off by those cross-ships, and we couldn’t even communicate with how overworked our ship systems were directly after that horrid jump.
We could do little to save ourselves. But there were others who could, and were seemingly setting out to do just that.
Green and blue bolts began to mesh with our white plasma, part of that pale fleet had broken off and were assaulting the red fleet from our right flank, creating a cross of fire, though it was plainly evident that these unknown people were doing most of the work, as our shots went wide or failed to strike through the enemies shields and flowed off their armor like water. Our only true success was taking down those fighters, and a few groups having an unspoken agreement to collectively target some of the relatively smaller enemy vessels, finally destroying them after putting dozens of shots through their thick armor, creating a mosaic of burning dots.
We had no time to cheer, a few dozen out of thousands didn’t mean anything, even with the encroaching pale fleet doing most of the work, fortunately this also meant that the unknown predators started focusing their efforts on them instead of us, giving our ships a small reprieve.
A voice rose above the cacophony of mayhem in the bridge “Sir there’s something coming through comms!” What? I thought-
“I THOUGHT YOU SAID COMMS WERE OFFLINE!?” Exactly what I was thinking, though with less screaming involved.
“They were, but-” He was cut off as static overpowered every noise in the bridge, my console indicating it was a message being broadcasted from the pale fleet. An incredibly distorted voice was barely heard through the static.
“Unknown fl_________re in gr___ danger _____ reactiv________ Anima Fie_______ re-r____ to Al___ Centa___ im___iately. If you __________ any lon____ you___________ apart.”
Alongside the near indecipherable broadcast, came a packet of data that was so heavily encrypted that I don’t think an entire planet's worth of computers trying to decode it could do so in anything less than a decade, but even so, the message was clear, or maybe it’s just what I wanted to hear. Leave.
The pale fleet was now sitting between the red fleet and us, firing off massive energy beams from what I can only assume are spinal cannons like our own, only these ones were shredding through the predators en masse. The ghost signal - not a real signal, demonic energy interferes with technology but they don’t know that. It’s the interference they’re picking up, which has been slowly increasing as the veil thins and rifts are made. Also a Stellaris reference.
Turbulence - The ‘turbulence’ was their ship's subspace drives and systems malfunctioning because they essentially jumped right on top of a rift without any kind of shielding. To put it in 40K terms, they basically jumped into a warp storm without a gellar field, and got off real lucky.
Demon proof your tech kids. Though that can be hard if you don’t know they exist.

Posting this here in the hopes that it will:
  1. Allow me to document this fix.
  2. Allow others to find the fix.
This has been one of the more frustrating and also confusing issues I've had. Mainly because it effects my entire network and while I had a similar issue on the initial setup, it was working fine until I needed to move the room that the router was configured in.
So now I'm back in the cycle! 😢
Here are the 13 steps given directly from Wyze support that have yet to resolve my issue.
  1. Check that your Wyze app is up to date.
    • Go to the Account tab > tap About.
    • The app version will be listed beneath the Wyze logo.
    • Compare your app version to the most up-to-date version listed on our Release Notes and Firmware page.
  2. Make sure you have the following setup requirements:
    • A modem or modem/router combination with an active broadband Internet connection with a LAN Ethernet port.
    • A smartphone with BluetoothⓇ and mobile data enabled.
  3. Confirm the smartphone being used for setup is using a mobile data 4G/LTE or 5G connection during setup.
    • This ensures the smartphone using the Wyze app doesn’t have a Wi-Fi network conflict.
  4. Make sure BluetoothⓇ permissions are enabled for the Wyze app.
  5. Confirm Wyze Mesh Router is connected to the modem’s LAN port.
    • Combination modems/routers usually have multiple LAN ports. Ensure your Wyze Mesh Router is physically connected to the LAN port of the combination modem/router.
  6. Confirm the Wi-Fi SSID of the combination modem/router is turned off.
    • If you are unsure, please check with your Internet service provider or the device manufacturer.
  7. Ensure that you are using a different name when you create your Wi-Fi network name on your new Wyze Mesh Router, if turning off SSID is not possible.
  8. Ensure all cables for the modem and root Wyze Mesh Router are correctly and securely connected.
  9. Confirm that the modem is working by connecting a laptop or PC directly to one of the LAN ports of the modem and check if you can access the Internet.
    • This can be done by going to a website, such as youtube.com, and attempting to play a video.
  10. Check if the home Internet is configured via a Dynamic IP address.
    • If not, you should have been given a static IP or PPPoE credentials after signing up for your Internet service. Choose the Configure ISP Settings option in the “Pairing failed” page to proceed with the static IP or PPPoE setup.
  11. Confirm the previous router’s MAC address is not locked.
    • In rare cases, your Internet service provider may lock the MAC address of the router that’s connected to your Internet. In these cases, the Internet service provider will have to manually unbind the old MAC address.
  12. Confirm the root Wyze Mesh Router is placed in an ideal location.
    • We recommend placing the router in an open area, close to the center of the home, on a flat surface or countertop (not on the floor or between furniture), and away from large electronic devices such as TVs or speakers. Ensure the router is laying flat and not on its side or tilted to ensure the best coverage.
  13. Move any devices experiencing issues closer to the root Wyze Mesh Router (within 10 feet).
  14. Power cycle the root Wyze Mesh Router.
    • Unplug the device for 30 seconds to 1 minute, then plug it back in.
  15. Factory reset the root Wyze Mesh Router using the pinhole method.
    • If the root router is reset, all satellite routers will also need to be reset.
    • Insert a paper clip or similar into the reset pinhole for 15 seconds. Wyze Mesh Router's status light will begin rapidly flashing orange to indicate the factory reset has begun and once the reset is complete, it will flash white to indicate that it has been reset and is ready to go.
If anyone has any thoughts on things I could try, that would be amazing. Otherwise, I'll post my findings in this thread for the next person to experience this!

Hello, for some reason when I load a full screen application any video on firefox freezes and the audio keeps going, I have no idea why, the problem doesn't happen with border-less full-screen or windows games. This is with firefox GPU acceleration off, with it on it makes all firefox windows go completely black, I am running a NVIDIA card on xorg plasma.

This will be a fairly detailed write up as I am using it as a log on my installation so I remember the correct sequence. If anyone spots a flaw or mistake in this or finds something I missed please point it out. I will be posting links to all my reference materials as needed.

Friday afternoon...
I got a CR E3 Free-Run 3D Printer Silent Board Motherboard V4.2.7 a week ago along with a Inovato Quadra mini linux machine as a Rpi replacement.
I am working on my Ender 3v2 that has a 4.2.2 and so I decided to attempt to install clipper on that board first as a test to keep the 4.2.7 as a backup if needed
Following the video on 3d prints leo YT we use a USB adapter to bypass some of the wifi issue in the quadra os ( the dynamic IP's and a wifi reset every 24 hours.

WIFI PROCEDURE:
Setting the internet to disable the onboard wifi and removing it, therefor isolating the adapter on the usb hub.
First Identifying the correct Wlan

I found both internet connections. one for the adapter and one for my home router.
^((\ FORK note - there was a difference here from the video guide. On my setup the adapter shows as Wlan0 and the home as Wlan1** this may be a issue?))*
In Leo's video it shows in reverse, the adapter being Wlan1 and home being Wlan0
Since the goal here was the creation of a single connection for this I continued the the correct setting for my system, deactivating the onboard wifi removing it from the NMTUI
Reboot IQ
(\FORK note- the video goes into root setting and disables the desktop mode. I wanted to keep that ability, so I skipped this part))
The next bit was fairly straightforward. I did the install of Klipper via Kiauh with following the Klipper install guide

For the IQ we skip the Rpi bit and start with kiauh install.

From here we use the text interface to make our selections and install Klipper Moonraker and Fluidd and Crowsnest.

Compiling/Flashing Klipper :
Run

In the menu I had a few choices. Github for my 4.2.2 board reads

I completed this step. run cmd
make
and compiled the file. I then renamed it "KFirmware".bin
^((\Note: The have been many different opinions on the correct renaming of these .BIN files. Some do by date other random, so I request clarification on this please.))*
Using WinSCP I copied the " Kilpper.bin" to a fat32 formatted 8gb w/ 4096 bit allotment SD card
I powered down my printer and installed this sd and restarted.
The screen lights up but is blank. Fans and l.e.d.s cam on. I gave it a min and powered it down again. extracted the SD card.

So long to leave printer on for the flash before reboot it and how to confirm the flash is successful. I have read the BIN file will rename to .CUR but have not seen this happen on my machine.)*

Next I went back to the ssh

Hey there, I'm just looking for a bit of advice regarding ventilation and placement of my new UPS. It might be a dumb question but I don't have a lot of knowledge in the area.
I've bought an Eaton 5E (650VA / 360W) for my small home network setup. It's pretty low end as far as UPSs go. All I'll be using it for is to handle proper shutdown of my Raspberry Pi and connected hard drive array in a power outage.
I was hoping to put this on the shelf in my entertainment unit along with the rest of my hardware. The shelf is exposed, so there are no cabinet doors to block air flow.
The UPS is unfortunately a couple centimeters too tall to stand upright on the shelf, so I'm considering placing it on its side.
I've flicked through the manual for the UPS and I can't find anything specifcially about the sideways placement, but it does (understandably) say not to block any of the vents.
The version of the UPS I have is fanless but there are vents on the front and both the left and right hand sides as shown here: https://imgur.com/a/ozx7bjs
I've attached some foam feet to to right side of the unit to raise it when on its side to avoid completely blocking the vents on the bottom, but I'm concerned that there may still not be enough air flow.

I understand that UPSs can have high heat output, so I'm a little concerned this this placement may still not provide enough heat dissipation...

So I recently built a computer and it's been working great until this last week. All of a sudden it's unable to run things as simple as minecraft without crashing. Minecraft gives me the exit code -1073740791, which tells me somethings wrong with my graphics card. Here are my current specs:
Motherboard: Asus B650E
GPU: RTX 4070 Ti
RAM Amount: 32 GB
Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 7700X 8-Core Processor
The error messages I get seem to be pointing towards the GPU being the problem, these are the things I have tried and that haven't worked:
Plugging the PC up to the wall outlet instead of a surge protector, Changing the PCI-E to gen 3, Updating the driver via GeForce Experience, Completely uninstalling the driver with DDU on windows safe mode, changing to "prefer maximum performance" via the NVIDIA control panel.
I have also blue screened a few amount of times which I fear is only contributing to the problem, here are the stop codes I've gotten.

I have 2 monitors hooked up via display cable to my pc, and they recently have been cutting out saying no signal in the middle of things. However what is wierd is if for example im watching a movie I can still hear the movie playing. I have changed the cables, checked monitor drivers, check graphics card driver, tried with just one monitor (does it for both), i dont believe jts overheating its pretty cold in my room. I am completely stumped and cant figure it out. I cant even do my timesheet some days before it crashes. 2023.05.28 05:55 Agentfennec The "Head" issue. + Other issues relating to heads.

TL:DR - The game at lowpop commonly has issues with TOO MUCH confirmed non-antag players, and there are other major issues with heads. Example: 5:12 Antag Possble - Non Antag (Confirmed) Legitimately happened on miros today. all 7 heads + other confirmed non-antags at 17 players.
WALL OF TEXT INCOMING. PLEASE READ EITHER THE TL:DR ONLY OR PROBLEM, OR PROBLEM/SOLUTION SECTIONS IF YOU CANNOT READ A WALL TODAY!
Most people who play on 14 either play Delta-V or Lizard- which commonly get high populations, so most people never see a round without 7/7 Heads- And always 5/5 of the actually USEFUL heads (AKA: Not QM or RD- they basically don't need to exist within the current state of lizard. Delta-V has epi but it's basically reskinned science- and in general Nyano/Delta always had a non-standard layout of roles and deps compared to most of 13 and lizard.)
But we should probably talk about Low/Med pop servers. Miros/Sala/Park mattering on the time of the day range from Med to Dead. As I generally don't play Sala often and park very rarely for when It's at a sizable player count, I'll be referencing Lizard/Miros more.
Now let's get to the actual meat of the problem, shall we?
THE PROBLEM:
Too much confirmed non-antags to antag-possible players- especially head. at low pop ESPECIALLY, but also med pop. As an example listed in the TL:DR - 5:12 Antag Possible - Not Antag (Confirmed) is a very bad ratio, as anyone with a brain should be able to figure out. And this isn't even a rare occurence, this is very common that 40-70% of players are confirmed non antag. Even at like 10 players I've seen it happen. I'll show you a light example, since that's all I've got in my memory.
Light Example: (8 Players Roundstart) - Captain, Security Officer, Atmos are confirmed non-antag. 5 other roles.
This isn't a bad roundstart, actually. It's pretty balanced I could say even due to how the game rolls traitor. This setup would generally would setup 1 traitor. 5:3 is a high ratio, but it isn't a horrible ratio. Infact the game even feels quite nice at 8 players like this- it's almost like a small social deduction game. I wouldn't mind a server centered around this type of social deduction like feeling. It could definitely be better however. (Also, Pretty sure a meat anomaly absolutely killed this shift. They had to evac and lost like 4 out of 11 crew since 3 people joined in later on, along with all of medbay. (1 of them being the only traitor) funnily enough- only 1 of them was antag possible. 2/3 late joiners were either heads, learners or atmos/sec.)
What about a heavy example?
May I reference that "lovely" 5:12 ratio? It's not even that extreme, It's mainly due to the miros newbie population if anything. without that newbie count and lowering the heads a bit you still have 8:9 (remove 2 newbies and 1 head) and that's still really bad. Antag possible players should never dip below 60% of the players, let alone 70-75% most of the time for a healthy round. (Yes, people late join. The main problem is ROUNDSTART. Latejoiners past 5 minutes commonly don't get traitor as often as people who roundstart join or latejoin before traitor roll. (Even if you include the latejoiners before 5 minutes, this shift was still 6:13. YES, latejoiners did join later on. I don't factor the latejoiners in for a reason, due to the general nature of latejoins to be pretty random.)
SO, WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?
Well 3 things cause this problem- I'll make it quick: Biased Role Selection, Culture, Antag Possibility
Biased Role Selection
For those who don't know- Heads are prioritised in role selection, and are rolled first. Even if it's on low, if even ONE person has a head on priority, a head WILL be in the game. This is good for high pop- all heads are commonly needed! situations with no CMO/RD/QM did happen during the era of 65 max players on lizard! There is a reason it was made this way. But what happens when you have pop not at high pop levels? (<45 players is a good definition where high pop ceases in most cases.) At low pop, you commonly don't need all heads, usually just a small group (Example: One of HoP/Cap to lead and do emmployment, CE, Warden or HoS and maybe one other head for extra) but due to this bias towards heads rolling first- Unless no one has a head on priority, there will always be that head. It can commonly lead to all or most heads even below 20 players! (Which in 13, you saw maybe 2-3 heads, here? well usually 4-7 heads- a third to half of all players!) Medium pop- Most of the time most but not all heads are needed. You can skip maybe 2-3 heads and be totally fine. Usually HoP/QM/RD/CMO can be tossed into the garbage with no issue- but it's best to not have all of them gone. However, it is generally VERY common for the game to roll all heads except maybe 1 or 2 on rare occasions even at 25-35 players, the lower areas of medpop.
Culture
Culture on official servers also plays a major part! People commonly joke about lizard players being blind, Incompetent or shitters, but as a lizard player- it's pretty true that there is a major portion of lizard players who are this. (If you've ever seen the admins randomly place shit in the middle of common areas, and make hints to it and no one realize for 15 minutes- you'd know the blind part is pretty true!) Lizard also has a culture of liking playing head- it's real, don't deny it. Most players on lizard have many heads enabled, even if low. Factor this in with the above reason.
Oh yeah, miros the low-med pop server that isn't sala. As the joke goes, "miros" is a common reason for a bad shift. "35% The above average players from lizard taking a break from NRP-LRP shitter extreme and doing not much, 40% Shitters that make lizard players look like the paragon of intelligence, 20% Semi-Incompetent newbies, 5% actually GOOD players." The population of miros is full of newbies. What do newbies do as soon as they see they unlocked an "important" role and the game is gonna give it to them 90%? They get head when they shouldn't as they press that sweet sweet high priority. and then the rest of miros culture is 50% shitter, meta-y lizard 35% way better lizard 15% Actually fine, non No-RP LRP! Miros is good at times but anyone who plays and isn't apart of group A or group C from the quote above knows this shitty part of miros.
Salamander is actually the one that suffers the least due to culture issues with it's whitelist. It's got a better, more roleplaying culture as you'd expect- Which cares slightly less about heads. but it's a whitelist server, so prretttyyy obvious.
Antagonist Possibilities
Let's compare the average SS13 Server of LRP/MRP style's antag limits. We are not comparing the higher end of MRP, and not HRP. HRP commonly has different antags, heavy rules or is skyrat and should be purged due to their bad decision making and removal of antags. (Cough cough ERP too)
Captain: SS13: Historically yes! Generally only lings you see often now, and promoted heads. SS14: Never happening, EVER. Changeling at most.
HoS: SS13: Ling. SS14: No, and for good reason.
Sec: SS13: Ling. SS14: No shit. makes no sense without ling.
CE: SS13: Yes! SS14: Hell naw.
HoP: SS13: Yes! SS14: Hell naw.
RD: SS13: Yes! SS14: Historically.
CMO: SS13: Yes! SS14: Historically.
QM: SS13 Yes, EVEN TO REVS. SS14: Historically.
Atmos: SS13: All Antags. SS14: Historically.
(This is not including park's minors, and Initials.)
While I'm not gonna go into the debate of if atmos/head antags is good (Firmly yes, with balancing and logic is my opinion. Antag heads in 13 always had a lower chance and other antags like ling make sense as such.) you should probably see the difference here. Now add the fact 14 has learner roles YOU MUST take (Unlike the usually reskinned passengers) with this and you commonly can see a major set of people removed from being antag- Which mixed with the other things that cause the problem.
SO, SOLUTIONS?
I'll be listing 6 solutions for this issue from Minor to Major for the game. I'll also list why it WOULDN'T be a good thing and how controversial it is.
Minor
Make heads less enticing to play - Controversial, and plainly stupid. It would do it's job at lowering the people playing head, yes. But it doesn't fix the key problem- Fuck heads in 14 are plainly pretty shit with like 3 of them being totally fucking useless besides some menial tasks and representation. (RD - Put disks in server!!! Oh and command access ig HoP - Be a backup captain that sits and adds access to a card- a thing any head can do now. oh and also getting planned to be removed. QM - Not even a real head smh) Not even gonna talk about how the cap is just a walking nukie-syndie target that checks departments and makes a few final says.
Increase role timers - Not Controversial, but maybe not the best for the game. Again, doesn't fix the core problem and probably adds more, but it would slightly lower the head amount and make people more sane & competent before they get into the important roles.
Add head caps for different player counts - Probably never even been thought of by people. might cause small issues, but it lowers the amount of heads during low pop rounds that simply- don't need all of them. Bandaid solution, but one good fuckin bandaid.
Rework the priority on heads - Probably controversial. Reworking the priority to be less major, make it effective at only certain pop or just removing it are all different solutions that can be called the same thing. Problems range from nothing but the fix being minor, to some obvious problems (Like removing it making heads during high pop not be confirmed when they are generally needed)
Make heads have agendas (Non-Antagonistic/Minor Antag) - Pretty sure coding/'mins have thought of this already to make head play more interesting and engaging for all involved. Honestly it would be cool to have that for many roles, not just heads and have it coexist with antagonism. I really like this idea, and as the bold says it would generally be cool to see it be extended to non-heads or even antag-possible players. not much downsides, generally interesting and could generally make the "head" problem not really exist! fixes 2 problems at once and makes a good addition to the game aside from the problems.
Head Antags - Look at SS13, and copy over low chance head antags. Would completely remove the 100% Trustable paragon of safety from heads, make it slightly more interesting for both head players and non-heads. Of cause the problem of low trust among command IS POSSIBLE. But even without low chances as a player during low tier heads being antag possible I never found it an issue. Very Controversial with the 'mins and coders, but slightly less with the playerbase. Probably won't ever happen with the current direction 14 is going in within both "official" and non-official servers. but it would be a good thing with balancing. It works for 13, it's good and would be good to have. (By the way, even one coder and min tried to make head antags MORE likely to make playing head less shit! not a good idea, but you can see WHY.)
Major
So, Conclusion.

2023.05.28 05:53 GRINDSETuwu Any email hoarders?

I have around 150000+ emails currently saved up. There is some important stuff in them and a lot of spam. Some of the spam is interesting (like social notifications showing whole post conversations) and some is outright malicious or has attachments I should never open. The original file for one of them is in pst format, but I am not completely sure if I am going to lose anything by converting it in mbox or other formats. (readpst was able to throw away directly all attachments and rtf body attachments, even if I am not sure about what the second thing means, but it worked fine).
The filesize either way is obviously a non issue. However, I am scared about the safety of the whole thing for two reasons: I am not sure about potential threats that can come from some of the emails, and I want to be able to store these emails in some cloud backup service without anyone else having access to them in the worst realistic case scenario.
The first one could be solved by setting up a vm, not even giving it internet access after the initial setup so I don't have to worry about anything running in the background or emails trying to do weird stuff like checking if someone is trying to pull an image from some server. I dont think the html itself could he harmful. For accessing the actual emails I checked evolution and it was fine, I was having issues with some other programs. I didnt check thunderbird.
The second issue could be maybe solved by only storing password protected archives, making sure the password is good enough. But I don't know much about it and heard stories about it only working in certain situations, if you are using certain options and in some cases some of the data can still be accessed with some compression formats.
But I imagine this second question is more broad and doesnt just deal with this specific case. So, overall I'm not sure. How do you go about it?

2023.05.28 05:45 Disastrous-Beat-9830 [CR Media] How to fix Candela Obscura (possible spoilers)

In the past couple of days, I've been particularly critical of Candela Obscura. I'm not going to recount every single criticism I have here, but will instead distill it down to two simple ideas: that there isn't anything original in the game; and that other systems do everything Candela Obscura is trying, only they do it better. I stand by those criticisms, but I also thought it might be worth exploring how they could be addressed. Please not that I only have a little bit of experience playing TTRPGs and zero experience designing them, so these might be completely implausible.
1. A somethingpunk setting
Perhaps the most disappointing thing from the series was the setting. I like the idea of a turn-of-the-century X-Files, but a lot of other media does this -- and what's more, they have something to define their setting. Blades in the Dark is the obvious choice, what with a city full of ghosts, as is Deadlands with its Weird West setting. The Dishonored video games feature a whalepunk setting, while the board game Scythe is in a dieselpunk world. Finally, the television series The Nevers combines the Victorian aesthetic with superheroes. Each of these give their media a distinct look and feel, but Candela Obscura doesn't have anything like that. Maybe it's something that will be explored through lore, but after the first episode, the world seems to be "our world, but magic". It really needs something distinct to set it apart. Alternatively (or in parallel), the setting could be moved away from the time period -- something like the American Revolution.
2. A territory control mechanic
Based on what we know so far, the game is set in the city of Newfaire. All of the supernatural phenomena are happening there because of the old city. But the aforementioned lack of a distinct setting means that most of the city is just names and short descriptions. There's no sense of geography. So in response, I'd like to propose a territory control mechanic. In this, the city is divided into districts and depending on their actions, Candela Obscura has a reputation in each of them. That reputation can change as the game unfolds -- succeeding or failing a quest, being seen by members of the public, attracting the attention of the authorities -- which would add benefits or complications to future quests in that district. These would include things like NPCs being more or less willing to talk or the OUP having a greater presence in the area. The rolls for this would take place at the end of the quest.
3. Less emphasis on classes, more emphasis on feats
Right now, player chooses a class and subclass, which gives them access to certain abilities. They also mark their proficiencies separately. But I think this system should be done away with entirely. Instead, all abilities should be available to every character from the outset. Each ability is tied to two traits, so when someone selects an ability, they mark their proficiency in one of these traits. If they get injured, the proficiency automatically swaps to the other trait, and if they get injured again, they have to draw a new ability. Players would only start with one ability, but at they level up, they can pick additional abilities or swap out existing ones. This would give more freedom and flexibility in character creation, but would probably mean that all of the abilities need to be rewritten.
4. A system that promotes failure to create opportunities
Exactly how much of an issue this is may be hard to say since it's partially a byproduct of the players' understanding of the rules. The system of a 1, 2 or 3 being a failure, a 4 or 5 being success with a complication and 6 being a perfect success means that things are geared towards mistakes and complications. The game does require a GM who knows how to make failures and complications proportionate to the attempted action and players who can turn complications into opportunities as well. This is the balance that the likes of Blades in the Dark strikes quite well. The main issue in Candela Obscura is the gilded die as it automatically recharges a character's Drive when it is used; the only question is how much they get back. This should be reworked so that the player has to choose between the gilded die or the rolled result on the other die. Accepting the gilded die means automatically failing, but getting your Drive back; rejecting the gilded die means that you can succeed in what you're attempting, but you don't get any Drive.
5. A legacy format
This is probably the most radical idea on the list. As previously mentioned, all of the stories take place in Newfaire. We know very little of the outside world, and I don't really expect we will see much -- if any -- of it. This means that every single game is taking place in the same city. And based on the lore established in the first episode, there are multiple groups of investigators in the city at any one time. With this in mind, the game could adopt a legacy format whereby permanent changes are introduced to the world. Every group would be considered canonical, and if other Actual Plays get up and running, those characters could be introduced, too (though I know there are probably legal issues here relating to intellectual property). Once a month, additional content for the game could be produced, with GMs incorporating it into their stories -- this would take the form of a major quest, with the setup for an individual group depending on their reputation at the time the game began.
