Ivan Maik, a 78-year old retiree, was murdered as he waited for his kidney dialysis treatment center to open early in the morning of Saturday April, 10, 2021. The killing was in Arlington, Washington, about 50 miles north of Seattle.

The Arlington Police Department said surveillance footage shows Ivan Maik, 78, stopped at a bank in Marysville and withdrew cash from an ATM before driving to the facility about 5:30 a.m. He parked near the front of the building in the parking lot.
An SUV was seen on surveillance footage following Maik’s car north on Smokey Point Boulevard and into the parking lot. The suspect got out of the car and approached Maik, according to police.
Employees who were leaving the building told police the suspect opened Maik’s car door and shot him. Police said the suspect then shot at the employees, who ran back into the building, uninjured.
The suspect then fled the scene.

Authorities have footage of the suspect's vehicle at several points; and have indicated that its believed to be a dark-colored 2013 or 2014 Range Rover Sport.
His family pledged a $25,000 reward for information leading to the killer.
Since the killing there have been zero announced developments in the case.
This happened very near where I live, and Mr. Maik was around my father's age; so it hit me especially close to home.
The detail about the vehicle being a dark-colored 2013 or 2014 Range Rover Sport seemed especially promising to me. I love to spot different cars, and I can tell you there are not a lot of mid 2010s dark colored range rover sports roaming our roads. It seemed like it would be simple to find the few registered owners and go get the suspect.
But... nothing.
A later report from about a year after the killing now indicated that

The killer also fired several shots at nearby witnesses, before escaping in a black SUV - possibly a Jeep - with silver rims.

So perhaps they misidentified the vehicle at first?

It's such a strange and awful case. He was followed from an ATM in the very early morning... miles away to the kidney center, and then the killer opened his door and shot him and point blank range, before also shooting at some witnesses. Was it a random thrill kill? Was it some extended road rage situation? Nothing in Mr. Maik's background indicates nothing other than a lovely older retiree.

Seattle public schools turned to remote learning to avoid the possibility of extending the school year into July after a late start due to a teacher strike. This is not a permanent decision but may not be a one-off case, either. The district "said this will be a year-by-year decision."
Parents sound divided: Some requested a way to avoid having their kids in school after Independence Day (!) while others are concerned that remote learning is not helpful for their kids.

This fall, Seattle Public Schools (SPS) and Seattle Education Association (SEA) worked together to create a remote instruction plan for potential snow days.
Because of the delayed start of the school year, the last day of school is June 30 with July 3, 5, and 6 as the three make-up days for potential snow.
SPS and SEA are responding to family and staff requests to avoid extending the 2022-23 school year into July if we have inclement weather (snow or ice).
Student and staff safety is a priority when making decisions related to inclement weather. SPS monitors weather forecasts and road conditions to determine if school changes are necessary. If snow or ice in the Seattle area affects road conditions, our schools may have schedule changes.
If weather conditions lead to schedule changes, we have two possible scenarios – two-hour late start with in-person learning or school buildings closed with students at home engaged in remote learning.

Snow days are now a thing of the past for Seattle Public Schools, at least for this school year.
The district sent out a memo to parents this week saying snow days will now be remote instruction days. The memo stated that the decision was based off parent and staff requests to not extend the school year into July with makeup days. But some parents say they feel like their children were not considered in this decision.
“All of these students that already proved that this doesn't work and it causes regression or no progress, like we're doing this all over again,” said Adele Kulisewa, a parent of two students in Seattle Public Schools.
Kulisewa said one of her children has physical and intellectual disabilities and she says remote learning is not a viable option and did not work for them during the peak of the pandemic.
“It was really difficult both emotionally and also just developmentally to just watch my student really struggle,” said Kulisewa.

Seattle Public Schools is making laptops and iPads available to students and are telling students to take them home before the Christmas break. The district said families in need of internet access at home should apply to the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). The district said this will be a year-by-year decision.

We also reached out to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction about this decision. They sent us the following statement:
“OSPI continues to advise school districts to use caution when deciding to switch to remote instruction when students cannot learn from their school buildings due to unforeseen circumstances, like weather-related events or other short-term closures. School districts are advised to consider whether each and every student will have access to the equipment, materials, and household environment needed to fully engage with their learning away from the school building and ensure the proper planning has occurred for the shift to be successful. If a district determines they can provide equitable access to remote learning and it is the best alternative for all students, families, and educators, they have the option to provide continuous learning through remote instruction. So far this school year, OSPI has seen most school districts take “snow days” instead of providing continuous learning.”

I believe if I asked liberals, they would say this is necessary due to the 'danger' of parental repercussions against LGBTQIA2S+ kids.
I see it more as a government waste and overlap of functions. If you take out the 'LGBTQIA2+S' - and just say 'should kids' be able to run away from their parents and seek asylum at these institutions, it seems odd. All kids should have some sort of ability of reporting abuse, and we do have these avenues, even if the state is terrible at reacting to them.

This one popped up in my head and I just looked it up to see if the killer had been found.
Early the morning of April 10, 2021, 78yo Ivan Maik stopped at a bank ATM to make a cash withdrawal. He then drove to Puget Sound Kidney Center where he attended regularly for kidney dialysis treatment.
A Range Rover was caught on surveillance following Mr. Maik's car to the parking lot. Two employees of the kidney center witnessed a person crouching near a car BEFORE the shooting of Mr. Maik.
No one was ever arrested for this crime, as best I can tell. Who killed him and why?
As of February 2022, there is a $25k reward to help tsolve this case
